The Camino de Santiago Associations of Friends are non-profit institutions found across the world that have worked for decades to conserve the Jacobean Route through the dissemination of its values and care of pilgrims.

These entities first emerged in 1950 in Paris, France. They were initially born as heirs to the old guilds of pilgrims to Santiago (also known as brotherhoods and fraternities) that extended across Europe between the 12th and 18th centuries with the aim of helping pilgrims on their journey to the distant destination of Compostela. By offering pilgrims their hospitals, information on the route, help, etc.; the brotherhoods altruistically supported pilgrims.

​I mean It is these experiences, experiences, sorrows and joys that we want to capture in this project “100 Ways in 100 Stories: short stories to Santiago”.

I mean Words create realities, they remind us of moments, they bring us to the present emotions and sensations of yesterday.

​I mean 100 Caminos en 100 Relatos wants to be a showcase for their experiences and a company for pilgrims who want to do the Camino or are already on it.

In the category for the Associations of Friends of the Way of Saint James, both national and international, the jury decided to give the award to the Fundación Acogida Cristiana en los Caminos de Santiago for the quality of its outreach activities and for their research projects. In addition, a special mention was given to the Asociación de Amigos de los Caminos de Santiago a Madrid because of the special work they are doing in dynamising, training for and promoting the Jacobean Route. On the international scene, the winners were the Asociata Prientenilor Camino de Santiago and the Círculo Chileno de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Compostela who share the prize.

Another of the recognised areas corresponds to the projects submitted by natural or legal persons and small and medium-sized enterprises. Six candidates were put forward for this category. The first prize was given to Leidiz, for its project aiming to travel the Mar de Arousa route and the Rio Ulla by kayak. The second prize was awarded to Tdinet App, which presented a project based on a mobile phone application that allows people to access selected information on the Camino de Santiago.

Finally, in the research category, two different types of award were given. In the first, aimed at universities, research centres and independent researchers, the jury decided to honour Albert Feliu Soler due to his innovative and multidisciplinary research on the psychological well-being that the Way of Saint James pilgrimage causes and promotes. The second award, for non-university education centres in Galicia, went to the CEIPP lurilingüe del Camiño Inglés in Oroso, thanks to its proposed pilgrimage with year 6 pupils from Finchale Abbey, considered to be the first stage of the English Way (Camino Inglés).

The winners of the 2019 European Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards, the most prestigious European awards for heritage work founded by the “Creative Europe” Programme, have been announced by the European Commission and Europa Nostra. 25 winners from 16 countries have been rewarded for their exemplary achievements in the categories of conservation, research, special dedication to heritage and education, training and awareness. The extraordinary project for the preventive conservation and restoration of the Portal of Gloria and its surroundings in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was one of the projects that received a prize in the Conservation category. It was carried out with the sponsorship of the Barrié Foundation.

The awards will be presented on 29th October in Paris, at the formal European Heritage Awards Ceremony that will take place during the European Heritage Congress.

The person in charge of collecting the prize from the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation was the General Secretary of the European Council, Thorbjørn Jagland, maximum representative of the European Cultural Routes.

The commissioner of Xacobeo 21, Cecilia Pereira, gave a thanking speech on behalf of the European Cultural Routes.

The awards convened by the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism are divided into four categories: the first distinguishes the actions carried out by city councils, city council groups, associations, local consortia and metropolitan areas of Galicia through which any of the officially declared routes of the Camino de Santiago run.

The second category awards the actions carried out by the associations of friends of the Camino de Santiago. As a new feature compared to previous years, two sub-categories are established: national associations and international associations. The third line distinguishes the activities undertaken by natural or legal persons constituted in a civil or commercial form and jointly owned entities that fall within the definition of small and medium enterprises.

Finally, the fourth recognises academic, research, or education initiatives or activities, on the one hand including the sub-category of research work undertaken by universities, research centres or similar and, on the other hand, the sub-category featuring educational work by non-university education centres of the Galician Community.

The call for entries is performed on a competitive basis and two awards are established for the first and third categories, the first of 15,000 euros and the second of 5,000 euros. In the second category there is a prize of 10,000 euros for the sub-category of national associations and a further 10,000 euros for the award-winning international association. In the fourth category, 10,000 euros is allocated for the first sub-category and 5,000 euros for the second, which corresponds to the work in non-university education centres of the Galician Community. Those interested in competing in these awards can consult the competition specifications as well as the specific documentation to submit and the deadlines in the DOG.

The award was given at the ceremony, which was attended by the director-manager of the Xacobeo, Rafael Sánchez, the director of the Chair, Domingo González Lopo, and the dean of the Cathedral, Segundo Pérez. In the work, its author compares the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela with the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of San Miguel in Monte Gargano, in southern Italy. To grant this recognition, the work’s originality was assessed as well as the special attention given to one of the least known chapters of the pilgrimage along the secondary roads (the tratturi), where there is a heightened presence of chapels dedicated to the Apostle Santiago and the Archangel.

The award given by the Chair consists of an economic boost which will allow the author to continue her research and which will also grant her access to the documents and bibliography present in the Chair’s library, located in the International Pilgrim Welcome Centre in Santiago de Compostela. Antonella Palumbo takes the testimony of Professor Rosanna Bianco, from the Universitá degli Studi de Bari, the winner of the first edition.

To this recognition are added this year’s scholarships which have been granted by this Chair for the first time. This is a study on the demarcation of the Portuguese Way, carried out by the researcher Carlos Manso, and another study on the hospitals of the Camino de Santiago which will allow a mapping of these infrastructures to be done, by Estefanía López.

The award ceremony, held at the House of European History, was presided over by Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament, on what was a symbolic day for the Way of St. James, coinciding as it did with the end of the commemorative programme for the 30th anniversary of its declaration as the First European Cultural Route. Over the last few months, various initiatives have been run to celebrate this anniversary and reflect on its integrating values.

Rafael Sánchez, head of S. A. de Xestión do Plan Xacobeo, collected the award together with Almudena Hospido, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and Tomás Gómez-Acebo, Vice-Rector for Students at the University of Navarra.

The Aquí-Europa Vocento Awards seek to promote and recognise commendable actions aligned with the ideology and spirit of the European Union and that promote the unity and integration of the continental project. The Way of St. James has obtained this distinction as a cultural initiative. In addition, other awards were given in the fields of institution/personality, company, communicator and country.

1.-  Any person over 16 and of any nationality can participate in the contest. The works will be submitted in Castilian Spanish, they must be original and may not have received awards in other contests. The maximum extension of each story will consist of 3 DINA4 sheets and must be sent in triplicate. The theme of the contest will be the Camino de Santiago (experiences, day by day, stories, customs, etc.). Each participant can send one or two works on condition that they are forwarded separately.

 2.-  All the works submitted will bear a title and a pseudonym and will be accompanied by a closed envelope whose exterior will show the title and the pseudonym; the interior will show the personal data of the author, his address, telephone number and  email address..

3.-  The works may be sent between July 15 and September 30, 2017, by post or a courier agency, to the following address: Concurso de Relatos. Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago Mozárabe Sanabrés, Carretera Nacional 525, km 49, 49326 Rionegro del Puente, Zamora (España-Spain). They may also be delivered personally at the Pilgrim Hostal of Rionegro del Puente. It is not allowed to compete by email.

4.- PRIZES: a JURY APPOINTED BY THE Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago Mozárabe   Sanabrés, will evaluate all the works submitted and will select the two best stories.
First Prize: 200 euros, a commemorative plaque, a diploma, a batch of books and gifts.
Second Prize: 100 euros, a commemorative plaque, a diploma, a batch of books and gifts.
The works awarded may be published jointly by the organisation for the development of the Camino de Santiago.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS.  This will be held in the Virgen de la Carballeda Pilgrim Hostel, of Rionegro del Puente, on Saturday December 2, 2017. If any of the prize winners cannot attend, the prize will be sent to him.

5.- The fact that a person presents himself to this contest, supposes the acceptance of the bases.
