The winners of the 2019 European Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards, the most prestigious European awards for heritage work founded by the “Creative Europe” Programme, have been announced by the European Commission and Europa Nostra. 25 winners from 16 countries have been rewarded for their exemplary achievements in the categories of conservation, research, special dedication to heritage and education, training and awareness. The extraordinary project for the preventive conservation and restoration of the Portal of Gloria and its surroundings in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was one of the projects that received a prize in the Conservation category. It was carried out with the sponsorship of the Barrié Foundation.

The awards will be presented on 29th October in Paris, at the formal European Heritage Awards Ceremony that will take place during the European Heritage Congress.

The Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), in collaboration with the Compostela Group of Universities, is organizing an international seminar titled The Way of St. James and Europe, to be held 23–25 October. The event is part of the activities programme created by the Xunta de Galicia to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Santiago de Compostela Declaration, which designated the Way of St. James as the first European Cultural Route.

This seminar, interdisciplinary and international, is addressed to all those interested in the Camino de Santiago and Europe.

The event will comprise three days of lectures and debates discussing legal, social and cultural aspects of the Way of St. James and Europe.

The seminar is being organized under the direction of Dr. Domingo Luis González Lopo, director of the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department at the USC, and Dr. María Teresa Carballeira Rivera, executive secretary of the Compostela Group of Universities.

The seminar’s scientific committee is made up of:

• Dr. Adeline Rucquoi. Co-director of the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department.
• Dr. Segundo López. Co-director of the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department.
• Dr. Marek Kręglewski. President of the Compostela Group of Universities.
• Miguel Vázquez Taín. Professor of art history at the USC.
• Marta Cendón. Associate professor of art history at the USC.

In the municipal government category, the award went to the Melide Town Council (A Coruña) for its work on beautifying and enhancing the section of the Way of St. James that passes through the town, signage for natural and heritage resources, and cleaning up sections of the route.

In the category intended to recognize initiatives and actions promoted by Friends of the Way of St. James associations, the award was given to the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago Associations, which has been working for over 25 years to promote gatherings and congresses, as well as coordinating an ongoing hostel volunteer programme; and the Lugo Friends of the Camino de Santiago Association, which has done significant work in our community.

In the third category, the Camino de Santiago Awards recognize the Tui company Ideas Peregrinas, which offers a hostel and a pilgrim space; and RedEmprendia for the Spin Way initiative, which involves students from various countries.

Lastly, there is a fourth category recognizing activities of an academic, research or educational nature. In this case, the winners were the Department of the Way of St. James at the University of Torun (Poland) and A Merced School in Sarria (Lugo).

Strict quality control of its articles, which are subject to scientific rules guaranteeing their rigour and merits, have already led the publication to be included in the top national and international journal indexes and databases: Rebiun, Dialnet, Latindex, OCLC-World Cat and Regesta Imperii. With this approval, they are now joined by the ERIH Plus journal index, which awarded this recognition in the fields of History, Art History, Literature and Interdisciplinary Research in the Humanities.

The inclusion of Ad Limina in these indexes is a source of great satisfaction, as it consolidates the journal’s position as the preeminent scientific publication on the Way of St. James and pilgrimages, making it an essential reference for any scholar or individual interested in this field.

The journal has recently published its eighth issue, expanding the brief yet intense history since its appearance in 2010. Together with the excellent quality of the publication, this provides further proof of the importance which Turismo de Galicia, through Xacobeo, places on advanced research around Jacobean culture, as set out in the Way of St. James Master and Strategic Plan. This research is the basis of one of the essential values of the pilgrimage: its historical authenticity. The ultimate goal of the journal is to guarantee the future of research around the Way of St. James, a key element underlying its current revitalization.

Aim
The aim of the 10th International Congress on Jacobean Studies is to thoroughly explore the most significant aspects of the patronage of St James. From this perspective, it will analyse the characteristics of the Apostle as the patron saint and protector of nations, cities, hospitaller orders, military orders, confraternities and churches. There will be a special focus on investigating the spiritual, iconographic, symbolic, political and historical aspects of a relationship which has had a profound impact on the culture and mindset of many peoples in Spain and the Americas.

Grants
The Xunta de Galicia, in partnership with the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department of the University of Santiago, is offering two grants for researchers to cover lodging expenses for the duration of the conference.

Accommodation
Students, the unemployed and members of Friends of the Way of St. James associations will be entitled to free lodging at the San Lázaro pilgrim hostel, located in Santiago de Compostela, during the conference.
Those interested in requesting free accommodation will be required to provide proof of their status as a student, unemployed person or member of a Friends of the Way of St. James association when submitting their registration.

On 10 November 2016, while opening up a wall in the chamber located in the lower part of the cathedral bell tower in order to remove the image by Master Mateo buried in the same area and discovered a few days earlier, when the perpend stones that made up the wall were removed, a fragment of a male figure was found. It had been built into the wall, with the back being reused as construction material.

Based on its characteristics, the piece has been ascribed to the so-called Master of the Wet Drapery, an enigmatic artist whose workshop was active in the cathedral around 1070. The cathedral museum contains three other pieces attributed to the same artist or workshop. All of them are linked by one common feature, the folds and treatment of the clothing, clearly influenced by classical models. The most immediate parallel is contemporary Burgundian work.

Following the discovery, the piece was thoroughly cleaned to remove the mortar attached to it. This work was carried out by the restoration department of the Cathedral Foundation. This prepared the piece, which still requires a more comprehensive restoration, to form part of The Power of the Past: 150 years of archaeology in Spain, an exhibition opening this October.

After its presentation, the piece will be on public view in the Grammarians’ Hall at Pazo de Xelmírez until 11 September, when it will travel to Madrid for the aforementioned exhibition. When the show closes, it will be placed on permanent display at the Santiago Cathedral Museum, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2018.

The Asociación de Periodistas y Estudiosos del Camino de Santiago (APECSA) (Association of Journalists and Students of the Camino de Santiago), composed of communication professionals, writers and historians, depending on its foundational objective, consisting of the dissemination and diffusion of the Camino de Santiago, through the professional activity of its members, convenes the V Edition of the APECSA International Award for the Dissemination of the Camino de Santiago, corresponding to 2017, in order to distinguish the best work of diffusion and promotion linked to the Jacobean world, published in the two years previous to this call (2015 and 2016).

On April 17, 2017, the APECSA Assembly unanimously resolved to dedicate the V Edition of this Award to Jeannine Warcollier

Bases

1. The following can be submitted to this edition of the APECSA International Award for the Dissemination of the Camino de Santiago: works and initiatives for Jacobean dissemination and promotion – books, publications, audio-visual productions, serials on any type of storage system, congresses, conferences, meetings, etc.- published or executed in 2015 and 2016, although they may previously or later continue in time. In any case, careers will not receive an award, just the work carried out in the time period stated in this base 1.

2. The initiatives presented to compete should preferably be oriented to all classes of the public and present an original refreshing facet regarding the dissemination of the Camino and the Jacobean world as regards its realities: Religious, cultural, touristic, etc. The justified scope of its dissemination will be evaluated. The works and initiatives can come from any country and be submitted in any Western language. They will be submitted by their promotors or authors.

3. The jury will be made up of 5 persons with acknowledged careers. Two members will correspond to APECSA, designated by its governing board, and the other three will be invited by APECSA and will represent the associations or organisations of journalists, the hotel trade and the business world linked to the Camino, and the Jacobean entities (associations, institutions, etc.).

4. The jury can declare the Award to be void, shared between more than one proposal and up to a maximum of two second prizes awarded, if this is considered right. The decision of the jury will be final.

5. Initiatives promoted by the convening Association, APECSA, cannot be submitted for the Award.

6. The period for submittal and reception of works and initiatives to compete will conclude on September 5, 2017. The Act for the presentation of the Award will take place in the final quarter of 2017. The members of the jury can present candidates at the beginning of the meeting.

7. The works competing will be delivered or forwarded to the following address: Calle Castrón Douro, 20, 15703 Santiago de Compostela. The title of the award and the corresponding edition will be stated in a prominent place.

8. The Award will consist of a sculpture, Harmonía, by Luís Loureira and an accrediting diploma.

9. The proposals which do not receive an award can be collected by those responsible for them or those who duly represent these, at the same address as the delivery within the three months following the decision on the Award.

A shared area of universal values
Hospitality, the welcoming of the pilgrim is a value which for centuries has been considered the cornerstone of the Camino de Santiago. A form of spirituality poetically depicted in the photographs which Manuel G. Vicente took along the Camino, on the route and in hostels during recent decades. The heart-warming welcome is fused with the experience of the encounter, solidarity, friendship and mutual understanding. Added to this are the values of the landscapes, the shared history and culture.

An experience of communication and affection
As the days pass, communication at several levels occurs on the Camino. In the first place, the pilgrim communicates with himself, the interior language is essential in the pilgrimage experience.  Introspection leads to reflexive, personalised self-construction, in which each person recreates his experiences through memory and affection.

In the second place, communication is established with the Camino itself and, finally, with the companions on the route, with the “hospitaleros” and the local people. The mental or spiritual space of the Camino de Santiago, evoked and recreated, is shaped through the affectivity of the person experiencing it; towns, cities, historical places and natural landscapes assume affective values in this spontaneous construction. A sensitive framework in which fertile communication takes place among the pilgrims, their natural environment and other persons.

Art and legend on the medieval Way of St. James

The discovery of what was supposed to be the body of the apostle St. James the Greater in Compostela in the early 9th century sparked one of the most significant religious, cultural and artistic phenomena of the Medieval West. The growing cult of St. James attracted large numbers of pilgrims, creating a pilgrimage route which reached its height in the 11th and 12th centuries. Legend tells of the arrival of the body of St. James in Galicia, brought by sea from the Port of Jaffa via the Ria of Arousa. This makes the Pontevedra location the most appropriate for this exploration of the cult of St. James the Greater, medieval art and the legends that emerged around the pilgrimage route to Santiago.
