A form of spirituality poetically depicted in the photographs which Manuel G. Vicente took along the Camino, on the route and in hostels during recent decades. Introspection leads to reflexive, personalised self-construction, in which each person recreates his experiences through memory and affection.

In the second place, communication is established with the Camino itself and, finally, with the companions on the route, with the “hospitaleros” and the local people. The mental or spiritual space of the Camino de Santiago, evoked and recreated, is shaped through the affectivity of the person experiencing it; towns, cities, historical places and natural landscapes assume affective values in this spontaneous construction. A sensitive framework in which fertile communication takes place among the pilgrims, their natural environment and other persons.

The Hostel has a total of 15 beds plus two adapted beds that include two companions. The hostel is full accessibility for all users.

Considering the reforms carried out, the levels of the ground and first floors were standardised and part of the west facade was replaced. A part of the south façade was replaced by a gallery and the lighting and ventilation conditions of the interior patios were improved. Improvements to accessibility were incorporated and architectonic components were restored together with the mural paintings of the building while three bedrooms were put in place, where up to 42 pilgrims could rest.

The Xunta invested a total of €600,000 in the fitting out so as to improve the services of the Camino Primitivo, with a hostel baptised with the name Ramón Rodríguez, a priest of A Fonsagrada who dedicated a large part of his life to making this route and this town known.

The declaration of the Caminos del Norte and the Camino Primitivo as World Heritage Sites brought an increased interest in travelling the routes. It is not surprising that only in the last 10 years, the number of pilgrims on the Camino Primitivo multiplied by four, reaching 12,100 last year.

Xacobeo Pilgrim Hostel Network

The confraternity has two pilgrim hostels in Spain. One on the French Route, in Rabanal del Camino (León), and the other on the Northern Route, in Miraz (Lugo). Both establishments are open seven months out of the year, are managed by volunteers and run on donations.

The confraternity currently has 1600 active members, who are responsible for educating and supporting other pilgrims. They also update the information on the different routes to Santiago de Compostela distributed at its London office and on its website.

Each year, the association holds a number of events: a general meeting, talks, lectures, seminars, pilgrimages, guided walks, screenings of films on the Way of St. James, and more.

After the success of the previous two editions, the endeavours fostered by the Xacobeo and by the United States Friends of the Camino Association, American Pilgrims on the Camino, completes its third edition this year with the intention to again reinforce the welcoming of pilgrims and strengthen the multinational dimension of the Camino de Santiago.

In recent years, this hospitality programme is giving rise to much interest among the members of this United States association, thus, this year it is planned that ‘Hospitallers’ from other associations, such as Holland, can be incorporated in other hostels over the next few months.

The ‘Voluntary Hospitallers’ was created three years ago in order to improve the welcoming given to the pilgrims who travel the pilgrimage routes in Galicia, collaborating with the ‘hostel staff ‘ in this special work involved in the Jacobean Pilgrimage and which constitutes one of the values which identify the Camino de Santiago.

It is not a question of carrying out hostel maintenance work but is especially intended to welcome the pilgrims, share their experiences and participate in their concerns. The final objective is to achieve that the pilgrims, especially those from abroad, feel more at home in the establishments of the public network of hostels.

PROGRAM

The Autonomous Community Police have deployed a total of 16 patrols along six routes (French, Portuguese, English, Fisterra and Muxía, North, and Primitive routes, and Via de la Plata), In collaboration with Heritage, their security efforts will place special emphasis on controlling illegal business dealings. These reinforcements are in addition to the protection services provided by the Autonomous Community Police on the Way of St. James throughout the year. Evidence of these efforts are the figures for 2016, during which there were over 800 deployments related to this issue, resulting in over 150 reports.

For its part, the Government Delegation is reinforcing its security operation with Civil Guard Traffic motorcycle officers from Seprona (Nature Protection Service), five horseback officers from the Civil Guard cavalry squadron, and a French gendarme, who will carry out mixed patrols and citizen security work.

In addition, also under the framework of the agreement between Interior and Agencia de Turismo, reflective materials will again be distributed to pilgrims this year. This is both a precautionary measure and intended to raise awareness. These materials will be available at hostels at starting points along the route: O Cebreiro, A Gudiña, Verín, Tui, Ribadeo, Padrón, A Fonsagrada and Sarria.
