The Xunta de Galicia signposted the Way of Saint James in the Piazza del Duomo in Pistoia (Italy) with the installation of a milestone 2505 kilometers from the Galician capital. The milestone joins the two cities and strengthens the town of Pistoia’s historic ties to the Way of Saint James. Xacobeo 21 commissioner, Cecilia Pereira presided over the ceremony, accompanied by the mayor of Pistoia, Alessandro Tomasi, the Bishop of Pistoia, Fausto Tardelli, prefect of the province of Pistoia, Emilia Zarrilli, and by the councillor of the Presidency, Institutional Relations and Tourism of Santiago de Compostela, Gumersindo Ginarte.

After the unveiling of the milestone, the commissioner participated in a meeting on the Camino de Santiago and the Xacobeo 2021, which included speeches by professor and chairman of the International Committee of Experts on the Way, Paolo Caucci von Saucken, and doctor and professor, Lucia Gay, among other specialists in the Jacobean pilgrimages.

In addition to bringing both areas closer to each other, this institutional trip allowed various matters to be discussed, such as the preparations of various actions to promote the Way of Saint James in Pistoia, a city that, during the next Compostela Holy Year, will have the papal privilege of opening a Puerta Santa. Pistoia is the only city in the world, other than Santiago de Compostela, that has had a genuine relic of St. James the Apostle.

The Xunta de Galicia just finished its 2019 Way of Saint James Awards, awards created by the Department of Culture and Tourism with the aim of recognising the work of associations, companies, schools and researchers surrounding the Way of Saint James.

In the category for the Associations of Friends of the Way of Saint James, both national and international, the jury decided to give the award to the Fundación Acogida Cristiana en los Caminos de Santiago for the quality of its outreach activities and for their research projects. In addition, a special mention was given to the Asociación de Amigos de los Caminos de Santiago a Madrid because of the special work they are doing in dynamising, training for and promoting the Jacobean Route. On the international scene, the winners were the Asociata Prientenilor Camino de Santiago and the Círculo Chileno de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Compostela who share the prize.

Another of the recognised areas corresponds to the projects submitted by natural or legal persons and small and medium-sized enterprises. Six candidates were put forward for this category. The first prize was given to Leidiz, for its project aiming to travel the Mar de Arousa route and the Rio Ulla by kayak. The second prize was awarded to Tdinet App, which presented a project based on a mobile phone application that allows people to access selected information on the Camino de Santiago.

Finally, in the research category, two different types of award were given. In the first, aimed at universities, research centres and independent researchers, the jury decided to honour Albert Feliu Soler due to his innovative and multidisciplinary research on the psychological well-being that the Way of Saint James pilgrimage causes and promotes. The second award, for non-university education centres in Galicia, went to the CEIPP lurilingüe del Camiño Inglés in Oroso, thanks to its proposed pilgrimage with year 6 pupils from Finchale Abbey, considered to be the first stage of the English Way (Camino Inglés).

The exhibition The Camino de Santiago. A contemporary pilgrimage experience is a new expression of contemporary creativity linked to Jacobean culture. This year this magnificent project, which opened in 2018 in the USA, travelled to Lorient, France, and in Wroclaw it started its journey to several places in Poland. On this occasion, it will be the Cervantes Institute in Krakow where you will have the opportunity to discover Jacobean tradition and the Camino de Santiago through the striking images of the audiovisual piece created by Manuel Valcárcel.

This exhibition is part of the presentation in Krakow of the Xacobeo 2021 programme and on the day of the opening there will be a cycle of lectures given by Franciszek Mróz. Pedagogical University of Kraków, Instytut Geografii, Faculty Member, titeld Pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela by Poles. Past and Present, and Francisco Singul, historian and head of the Department of Jacobean Culture of Xacobeo-Xunta de Galicia (Galician regional government), entitled Camino de Santiago. Worldview and culture.

Today the experience of the pilgrimage to Santiago De Compostela allows the pilgrim to get to know themselves, but also other pilgrims, travel companions, the local population and the spectacular setting of a universal and open Camino that has always been understood as a sacred space. At the end of this physical and spiritual adventure, the encounter with the city of Santiago and its cathedral is topped off with an intimate visit to the Tomb of the Apostle James the Greater and the image of the altar. The suggestion of supplementing the Camino with a trip to the European Finisterra (Cape Finisterre) is fundamental to understanding the mentality of medieval pilgrims, a place of great significance usually visited after you have completed the experience of the Camino in the sanctuary of Compostela.

Location: Cervantes Institute in Krakow
Address: Kanonicza, 12. Krakow
Dates: from 29 October to 20 November
Opening times: From Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 19:30 and Friday from 9:00 to 15:00.
Organisers: Xacobeo 2021. Galicia Tourism. Xunta de Galicia
In collaboration with: Cervantes Institute in Krakow. Spanish Embassy in Warsaw.

At the Galician Council’s press conference today, the President of the Galician Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, announced that the Council of Europe was being recognised as Ambassador of the Way of Saint James. This title was created in 2013 to distinguish the work of individuals and institutions that have contributed to raising awareness and publicising the path and its values.

In the case of the Council of Europe, the institution was recognised for its key role in publicising, promoting and raising awareness of the Jacobean Route and the values associated with it. In fact, Feijóo stated, the institution declared the Way to be the first Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 1987 and promoted the Jacobean values as common European heritage.

The International Pilgrim Welcome Centre, which used to be a nursing home on Rúa das Carretas and was designed by local architect Jesús López de Rego, now has an enormous new space in which pilgrims, arriving in the capital of Galicia to collect the Compostela (accreditation of the pilgrimage to the Tomb of St. James), are able to rest and wait to receive this valued accreditation. The restoration has recovered the only space from López de Rego’s plan that has been preserved.

These works allowed the original appearance of this room, which served as a rest area for the nursing home’s patients, to be restored. Then it was divided to be used as a kitchen and a laundry room, losing the splendour of the brick-vaulted room that has now been recovered by architect Carlos Rosón.

It is now spacious and bright, with an exit onto the back gardens of the old nursing home in which the pilgrims will be able to rest while screens indicate how the queue to collect the Compostela is progressing. The garden has also been developed, to reclaim the building’s idea and original concept, and a lift has been installed to ensure accessibility. The project was funded by the Cathedral and is an addition to the reform of the façade and woodwork, which was funded by Tourism of Galicia.

The Xunta de Galicia has just convened the new edition of the 2019 Camino de Santiago Awards, as published today in the Diario Oficial de Galicia (DOG) journal, which recognises progress and commitment in the Jacobean field of various groups at both national and international level, including public and private actions designed to conserve and improve the Camino de Santiago, but also research and work that influences its dissemination.

The awards convened by the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism are divided into four categories: the first distinguishes the actions carried out by city councils, city council groups, associations, local consortia and metropolitan areas of Galicia through which any of the officially declared routes of the Camino de Santiago run.

The second category awards the actions carried out by the associations of friends of the Camino de Santiago. As a new feature compared to previous years, two sub-categories are established: national associations and international associations. The third line distinguishes the activities undertaken by natural or legal persons constituted in a civil or commercial form and jointly owned entities that fall within the definition of small and medium enterprises.

Finally, the fourth recognises academic, research, or education initiatives or activities, on the one hand including the sub-category of research work undertaken by universities, research centres or similar and, on the other hand, the sub-category featuring educational work by non-university education centres of the Galician Community.

The call for entries is performed on a competitive basis and two awards are established for the first and third categories, the first of 15,000 euros and the second of 5,000 euros. In the second category there is a prize of 10,000 euros for the sub-category of national associations and a further 10,000 euros for the award-winning international association. In the fourth category, 10,000 euros is allocated for the first sub-category and 5,000 euros for the second, which corresponds to the work in non-university education centres of the Galician Community. Those interested in competing in these awards can consult the competition specifications as well as the specific documentation to submit and the deadlines in the DOG.

The Galician Ministry of Culture and Tourism has just submitted a tender for the contract of repair, restoration and preventive conservation works on the ethnographic complex of pallozas (traditional huts) at Cebreiro, in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, at the amount of 180,000 euros.

The main works will comprise the replacement of the thatched straw roofs, which will be completely restored on three of the pallozas. The Quico palloza’s roof will be partially replaced and taken advantage of as it is in better condition. The wooden structure of the Palloza Museo roof will also be repaired.

Equally importantly, the works will replace or repair slabs in the perimeter drain entrances, electricity and lighting will be improved and treatments to prevent insect attacks on wooden structures will be carried out. The works will be completed in four months.

The four Cebreiro pallozas that form the complex are managed by Xunta de Galicia. So far this year, around 15,000 people (14,896 to be precise) visited the Palloza Museo between January and November. The highest number of visitors came between May and October. May was the month with the highest number of visitors this year, recording 2,278.
