The Way of St James in 3D is a 3-dimensional photography show featuring spectacular large pieces produced using a stereographic technique. The exhibition presents images of the pilgrimage routes, heritage sites, landscapes and pilgrims on the English Route, Fisterra鈥揗ux铆a Route, Portuguese Route and Portuguese Coastal Route.

The title of the show is a reference to the sea of the Atlantic routes which open the exhibition, the sea of the Portuguese and Galician coasts that is so strongly linked to the Portuguese pilgrimage routes to Santiago. And it ends with the open ocean along the Costa da Morte, the physical and symbolic finishing point of the route to Fisterra and Mux铆a, after reaching Compostela.

A contemporary pilgrimage experience is a new expression of contemporary creativity linked to Jacobean culture. This year this magnificent project, which opened in 2018 in the USA, travelled to Lorient, France, and in Wroclaw it started its journey to several places in Poland. On this occasion, it will be the Cervantes Institute in Krakow where you will have the opportunity to discover Jacobean tradition and the Camino de Santiago through the striking images of the audiovisual piece created by Manuel Valc谩rcel.

This exhibition is part of the presentation in Krakow of the Xacobeo 2021 programme and on the day of the opening there will be a cycle of lectures given by Franciszek Mr贸z. Pedagogical University of Krak贸w, Instytut Geografii, Faculty Member, titeld Pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela by Poles. Past and Present, and Francisco Singul, historian and head of the Department of Jacobean Culture of Xacobeo-Xunta de Galicia (Galician regional government), entitled Camino de Santiago. Worldview and culture.

Today the experience of the pilgrimage to Santiago De Compostela allows the pilgrim to get to know themselves, but also other pilgrims, travel companions, the local population and the spectacular setting of a universal and open Camino that has always been understood as a sacred space. At the end of this physical and spiritual adventure, the encounter with the city of Santiago and its cathedral is topped off with an intimate visit to the Tomb of the Apostle James the Greater and the image of the altar. The suggestion of supplementing the Camino with a trip to the European Finisterra (Cape Finisterre) is fundamental to understanding the mentality of medieval pilgrims, a place of great significance usually visited after you have completed the experience of the Camino in the sanctuary of Compostela.

The restoration has recovered the only space from L贸pez de Rego鈥檚 plan that has been preserved.

These works allowed the original appearance of this room, which served as a rest area for the nursing home鈥檚 patients, to be restored. Then it was divided to be used as a kitchen and a laundry room, losing the splendour of the brick-vaulted room that has now been recovered by architect Carlos Ros贸n.

It is now spacious and bright, with an exit onto the back gardens of the old nursing home in which the pilgrims will be able to rest while screens indicate how the queue to collect the Compostela is progressing. The garden has also been developed, to reclaim the building鈥檚 idea and original concept, and a lift has been installed to ensure accessibility. The project was funded by the Cathedral and is an addition to the reform of the fa莽ade and woodwork, which was funded by Tourism of Galicia.

During the compostela awards ceremony, Feij贸o stated that this increase in the number of pilgrims, arriving from 172 countries and on more and more pilgrimage routes, shows that “Galicia gusta” and that everyone’s work, especially those in the tourism sector, has made the Camino de Santiago more than just an exclusive phenomenon of the holy years.

In this sense, he recalled that the Galician Government is working on the care and promotion of the Camino de Santiago through its Master Plan, an initiative with an investment of 56 million and eight work lines. With constant planning, criteria and direction: to improve, recover and conserve the natural and cultural heritage; to continue investing in responsible and diversified tourism; and to continue valuing that which sets us apart from the rest – excellence based on tranquillity and authenticity.

This international appointment of the World Trail Network, which will be the 7th, will bring to Galicia representatives of the itineraries of the five continents, thus enhancing the attraction capacity of the Camino de Santiago among the users of the said routes.

Among those associated with the WTN, and who will participate in the Santiago congress, the following stand out.

In China: to China Volkssport Association, the Mountain Journey China; in Japan: the Japan Long Trail Association, the Japan Walking Association, the Kumano kodo (represented by Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau) and the Walking Shikoku Association / Shikoku El-henro; Nepal: Great Himalayas Trails; in Korea: Jeju Mire Foundation, to Korea Walking Federation, etc; in Taiwan: the Thousand Miles Trail Association / Thousand Miles Trail of Taiwan; in Turkey: the Turkey 鈥榮 Culture Routes Society.

In Europe it is necessary to highlight the Paths of Greece (Greece) and Lough Avalla Farm Loop (Ireland); in South Africa the Rim of Africa Trail itinerary; in North America: The Bruce Trail Conservancy (Canada) and the American Trails (USA); in Central America Alliance was the Pacific Trail (Costa Rica), Caminando Panama Foundation; in South America: the WWF Brazil; in Australia we must highlight the Bibbulmun Track and the Trails of Western Australia.

This international conference will have a significant projection for Galicia in general and Santiago de Compostela and its ways in particular, as speakers and congressmen from all five continents participate, representing various cultural, ecological and pilgrimage itineraries from all over the world. Its sessions will consist of various lectures and round tables, as well as specific meetings, a film festival and a small promotional fair, in which representatives of the different itineraries of the world that are part of the World Trails Network will participate.

This forum is organised by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Compostela Group of Universities (CGU) and Helsinki Espa帽a – Human Dimension.

Objectives

o Increment the knowledge and awareness of young people regarding Human Rights and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through the spirit of the Camino de Santiago.

o Promote the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in its key areas: inclusive economic growth, employment and poverty reduction, resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change, cultural values, diversity and heritage, mutual understanding, peace and security.

o Increase the commitment of participating universities to work towards knowledge and application of the SDGs until 2030.

o Foster international cultural exchange, sustainable tourism and solidarity through mutual knowledge and volunteerism, promoting social inclusion, environmental protection and the reduction of poverty and social exclusion.

Pilgrims

The organising committee has selected 20 universities from Europe, America, Africa and Asia to complete the first two stages of the First International University Forum. 125 students and 20 professors will participate in the online training and walk the Camino de Santiago.

In March, 20 rectors of these universities will join them at the First International University Forum: The Value of Human Rights on the Camino de Santiago: Harnessing the power of tourism to promote cross-cultural dialogue and achieve the SDGs in Santiago de Compostela.
