The exhibition was first enjoyed last December at the Galician Centre of Contemporary Art (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela, coinciding with this anniversary’s commemorative event.

The main works will comprise the replacement of the thatched straw roofs, which will be completely restored on three of the pallozas. The Quico palloza’s roof will be partially replaced and taken advantage of as it is in better condition. The wooden structure of the Palloza Museo roof will also be repaired.

Equally importantly, the works will replace or repair slabs in the perimeter drain entrances, electricity and lighting will be improved and treatments to prevent insect attacks on wooden structures will be carried out. The works will be completed in four months.

The four Cebreiro pallozas that form the complex are managed by Xunta de Galicia. So far this year, around 15,000 people (14,896 to be precise) visited the Palloza Museo between January and November. The highest number of visitors came between May and October. May was the month with the highest number of visitors this year, recording 2,278.

The title of the show is a reference to the sea of the Atlantic routes which open the exhibition, the sea of the Portuguese and Galician coasts that is so strongly linked to the Portuguese pilgrimage routes to Santiago. And it ends with the open ocean along the Costa da Morte, the physical and symbolic finishing point of the route to Fisterra and Muxía, after reaching Compostela.

He was born in in 1956 in the Prefecture of Nara, in Japan and in 1988 he presented his first exhibition The Land of Sherpa with photographs hich he took in Serpa, in the Himalayas.

Later he travelled all over the world taking images of Japanese, Romanic and Byzantine art, as well as Buddhist ruins and Chinese cave paintings, the Borobudur, Angkor and Ajanta. These were joined together under the heading Spaces for prayer, forms of prayer in photographic exhibitions and publications.

This exhibition was inaugurated in Paris in 2008 where the artist expressly referred expressly to Vilar de Donas, declaring the deep impression they had caused. Subsequently, he travelled to Wakayama (Japan), to Tokyo, where he exhibited for three months in the Aida Museum, to México D.F. and to Santiago de Compostela.

In 2010, the S.A. de Xestión do Plan Xacobeo, programmed its routes through Galicia, passing through several Town Halls of the Camino de Santiago such as Palas de Rei, Redondela, Dumbría, Bertamiráns, Muxía and Fisterra, showing his view of the experience which the pilgrimage produced in this Japanese photographer. In 2011, thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Consulate in Hamburg, he exhibited in several cities of Germany, Lübeck, Hamburg, Hannover, Buxtehude and Kiel, with great success among the public and continued his travels in 2012 inaugurating in Regensburg. He then travelled to Malaga and Castuera, and has now arrived in Valencia in collaboration with the Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago of the Community of Valencia.

Nearly 32,000 people have visited the interpretation centres on the Way of St James so far this year.

Galicia has four such centres spread out in the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña, located on three of the existing routes: the French Route, whose centre is in Cebreiro; the North Route, with the centre in Mondoñedo; and the Primitive Route, whose centre is in Lugo.

Rounding out this information service are the new facilities located at the end of the pilgrimage, in Santiago de Compostela, as part of the features of the International Pilgrim Welcome Centre.

This type of interpretation centre, managed by Turismo de Galicia through the Xacobeo, provide a huge added value to the pilgrimage experience by offering pilgrims support, information and additional content that helps them to understand and learn more about the Way of St James in general, and the route they are walking in particular. They do so from the various perspectives present on the route and that help to enhance them.

The Way of St James interpretation centre in Cebreiro, at the emblematic point where the French Route enters the province, hosted the most visitors, already in excess of 12,000. It is this route that is most travelled by pilgrims, accounting for 60% of all walkers. The facility in Lugo received over 6,300 visitors, and the one in Mondoñedo close to 3,200. Finally, over 10,000 visited the International Pilgrim Welcome Centre, near the Plaza del Obradoiro, a location where Turismo de Galicia has set up spaces where pilgrims can receive advice on how to continue their stay in the region after reaching Compostela.

A summer of new features and improvements

Every centre is located on routes that have been declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO, routes that like all the other itineraries, are constantly being improved under the Master and Strategic Plan of the Way of St James. As we look forward to Xacobeo 2021, numerous initiatives are already underway involving things like route maintenance, signposting and safety, enhancement of heritage values, increased accessibility and environmental sustainability and promoting Xacobean research and culture.

Recent weeks have seen the launch of numerous projects, like the pools in the Monte del Gozo Park, which are free all summer long for all visitors, and the new shelter in A Fonsagrada, following the remodelling of a historic building. The Public Network of Shelters also debuted accessible tactile signs for the blind and visually impaired. All of these initiatives have been extended to the Portuguese Route, its variant along the coast, to the English Route, to the Via de la Plata, the Muxia-Fisterra Route and to the Winter Route.

The 2017 edition of Spin Way is promoted by the University of Santiago de Compostela, in collaboration with RedEmprendia, the International Youth Organization for Iberoamerica (OIJ) and the Spanish Youth Institute (INJUVE).

Registration for Spin Way is free and participants’ room and board expenses are covered during the programme. Additionally, the OIJ will provide financial support for travel to Spain for successful candidates travelling from Latin America.

With the aim of revitalizing the French Route of the Way of St. James through Aragón, the Jaca City Council and Government of Aragón have organized an international conference in Jaca on 17, 18 and 19 March. This event brings together the experience and knowledge of people who devote part of their life to studying and promoting this route from different perspectives (culture, history, environment, tourism, etc.) in various areas (other municipalities, other autonomous communities, other countries, etc.).
