This project complies with all the rules on accessibility, elaborating on the objectives of the Tourism Accessibility Plan of the Camino de Santiago. This infrastructure, Ourense has recovered a disused building in a strategic location that will allow pilgrims to enjoy the city during their stay.

The building bears the name of Eligio Rivas Quintas, one of the pioneers in the study and dissemination of the values associated with the Camino, particularly, to the Vía de la Plata or Mozarabic route.

After the success of the previous two editions, the endeavours fostered by the Xacobeo and by the United States Friends of the Camino Association, American Pilgrims on the Camino, completes its third edition this year with the intention to again reinforce the welcoming of pilgrims and strengthen the multinational dimension of the Camino de Santiago.

In recent years, this hospitality programme is giving rise to much interest among the members of this United States association, thus, this year it is planned that ‘Hospitallers’ from other associations, such as Holland, can be incorporated in other hostels over the next few months.

The ‘Voluntary Hospitallers’ was created three years ago in order to improve the welcoming given to the pilgrims who travel the pilgrimage routes in Galicia, collaborating with the ‘hostel staff ‘ in this special work involved in the Jacobean Pilgrimage and which constitutes one of the values which identify the Camino de Santiago.

It is not a question of carrying out hostel maintenance work but is especially intended to welcome the pilgrims, share their experiences and participate in their concerns. The final objective is to achieve that the pilgrims, especially those from abroad, feel more at home in the establishments of the public network of hostels.

The Autonomous Community Police have deployed a total of 16 patrols along six routes (French, Portuguese, English, Fisterra and Muxía, North, and Primitive routes, and Via de la Plata), In collaboration with Heritage, their security efforts will place special emphasis on controlling illegal business dealings. These reinforcements are in addition to the protection services provided by the Autonomous Community Police on the Way of St. James throughout the year. Evidence of these efforts are the figures for 2016, during which there were over 800 deployments related to this issue, resulting in over 150 reports.

For its part, the Government Delegation is reinforcing its security operation with Civil Guard Traffic motorcycle officers from Seprona (Nature Protection Service), five horseback officers from the Civil Guard cavalry squadron, and a French gendarme, who will carry out mixed patrols and citizen security work.

In addition, also under the framework of the agreement between Interior and Agencia de Turismo, reflective materials will again be distributed to pilgrims this year. This is both a precautionary measure and intended to raise awareness. These materials will be available at hostels at starting points along the route: O Cebreiro, A Gudiña, Verín, Tui, Ribadeo, Padrón, A Fonsagrada and Sarria.

This new location brings this important facility closer, making it easier for its intended users, pilgrims, to access both the Center and its information, as it is now physically located along the North Route, next to the hostel for pilgrims.

The North Route to Santiago de Compostela is thus gaining more devotees, continuing its strong upward trend in the number of pilgrims, which have totaled 17,200 so far this year. This is more than 9% higher than for the same period last year and solidifies its standing as the third most traveled route to Santiago, only behind the French Route and the Portuguese Route.

Along with this Interpretation Center on the North Route in Mondoñedo, which has been visited 4,297 times so far this year, the Galicia Board of Tourism currently has another Interpretation Center on the Primitive Route, located in Lugo, and two information points in O Cebreiro and the International Welcome Center for Pilgrims, located on Carretas Street in Santiago de Compostela.

The show features the photography of Manuel García Vicente, depicting experiences shared with pilgrims on the Way of St. James.

Organized by Turismo de Galicia, this exhibition promotes the values of the Way of St. James in Great Britain, using images to show the experience of hospitality and solidarity along the Camino, in pilgrim hostels and at the end of the route in Compostela.

This is the second time the Hospitality on the Road to Santiago to Compostela exhibition has visited Durham. Last summer, it was also on view in the parish church of Our Lady of Mercy and St. Godric, located near Finchale Priory, a Benedictine abbey, which has a long Jacobean tradition as a spot frequently visited by English pilgrims setting off on the Way of St. James.

Its closing marks the end of a milestone which lent significant drawing power to the Way of St. James, Santiago and Galicia.

The Jubilee of Mercy was the driving force behind the excellent figures for pilgrim and other tourist arrivals reported by Galicia. It helped make it possible to beat the spectacular pilgrim numbers of the 2010 Holy Year, with 271,000 Compostelas issued in the year to date.

Special programming
As part of the Jubilee of Mercy, Turismo de Galicia offered Galicians, tourists and pilgrims who visited us during this period special programming that enhanced the value of our autonomous community’s offerings.

This programming included a wide range of cultural, artistic and social events, as well as initiatives related to tourism development and visitor reception.

Musical programmes, including the Latitudes series and Music on the Camino, the SOLIDARITY Conferences series and such exhibitions as Galicia, House of Pilgrims and Via Iacobitana are just a few of the many activities offered to commemorate this Jubilee of Mercy, ending tomorrow.

The Pazo da Cultura of Pontevedra hosts the “Via Iacobitana” itinerant exhibition, a collection of photographs on the Camino de Santiago taken by Galician photographers who became pilgrims in order to portray their particular view and the sensations suggested by the Jacobean Route.

The exhibition is framed within the collaboration agreement signed by Turismo de Galicia and Viaqua through which the exhibition has already visited Santiago de Compostela, Ribadeo, Vivero and Valdoviño and can also be seen in the cities of Ourense and Fene.

The exhibition makes it possible to see several itineraries at different times of the year, its varied landscapes, the pilgrims, the local people and the treasured cultural heritage from the personal point of view of the author, who stamps his personality.

The city of Pontevedra hosts this exhibition until October 23, 2016 and can be visited from Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m..

The exhibition renders homage to all the voluntary hospitaleiros who constitute the keystone for the Jacobean route using a select collection of photographs by Manuel G. Vicente.

The photographs, which were taken in recent decades, from the endo of the nineties until the present time, show the important function of the voluntary hospitaleiros in hostels and at points on the Camino de Santiago.

Thus, through the photographs, we can see in depth the generous mission undertaken daily by the Associations o Friends of the Camino and the voluntary hospitaleiros all over the world, flooding the Jacobean Route with the essence of fraternity and solidarity and disseminating the cultural and spiritual content of the Camino.

The “Welcoming and Hospitality in the Camino de Santiago” exhibition could already be visited in Santiago de Compostela and is currently following an itinerary through the centres of the Jubilee of Mercy in Galicia.

The Afundación centre in Ferrol hosts the exhibition from today until November 19, 2016.  Visiting times are: from Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
