Der sagenumwobene Fund des mutmaßlichen Körpers des Heiligen Apostels Jakobus des Älteren zu Beginn des 9. Jahrhunderts in Compostela löste im Mittelalter eines der bedeutungsvollsten religiösen, kulturellen und künstlerischen Phänomene des Abendlandes aus. Die wachsende Verehrung des heiligen Jakobus zog immer mehr Pilger an bis schließlich ein Pilgerweg entstand, dessen Blütezeit zwischen dem 11. und 13. Jahrhundert lag. Der Legende nach wurde der Leichnam des heiligen Jakobus auf dem Seeweg vom Hafen Jaffa über die Flussmündung von Arousa nach Galicien gebracht. Deshalb bietet sich die Außenstelle der Fernuniversität von Pontevedra bestens für ein Seminar über die Verehrung des heiligen Jakobus, die Kunst des Mittelalters und die Legenden, die sich um den Jakobsweg ranken, an.
