XI International Congress of Jacobean Studies: Bérenger de Landore 🗓 🗺

The International Congress of Jacobean Studies is one of the main scientific meetings of the Jacobean culture promoted by the International Committee of Experts of the Camino de Santiago, with the collaboration and sponsorship of the Department of Culture and Tourism.

This congress has been held since 1993 and this edition, which will be the eleventh, will be dedicated to the important figure of the archbishop of Compostela Bérenger de Landore. In 2018 it was 700 years since his arrival in Santiago de Compostela.

The XI International Congress of Jacobean Studies will feature the scientific direction of Adeline Rucquoi, a member of the International Committee of Experts of the Camino de Santiago and a PhD in history from the University of Sorbonne (Paris IV) and Director of Emeritus Research at the C. N. R.S. (National Scientific Research Centre, France).

In this edition, the Congress will feature 20 speakers who are top-level researchers, formed of veteran representatives of institutions, chairs and study centres, who will be joined by other younger, promising specialists, who will also present valuable reflections and contributions on significant aspects about the figure of the archbishop Bérenger de Landore, the town of Compostela, the Order of Preachers, Jacobean art and culture.

Galicia, un relato no mundo [Galicia: a story in the world] explores the interaction between the historical land of Galicia and the rest of the world, in a tale that takes us from the Prehistoric Age to the present. It has been conceived as the first of three major exhibitions organised by the Regional Government of Galicia to celebrate the Jacobean Year of 2021, focusing on Galicia’s international relations and its presence in the world.

For the first time ever, outstanding pieces of high symbolic value for the history and culture of our country will be arriving in Galicia for the exhibition. They are currently in prestigious museum collections around the world, such as the Parker Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Library of Arezzo in Italy, and the National Museum of Archaeology in Portugal.

These first-time opportunities include the Lebor Gabála Érenn (Book of Invasions), part of the Book of Leinster, which tells the story of the invasions of Ireland by different peoples, and includes the first known mention of the legendary character Breogán. It will be the first time that this essential work of mediaeval Irish literature has left its country. Also making its first trip to Galicia will be the Sawley Map, considered one of the first European encyclopaedic maps of the world, dating from the period of the Portico of Glory (12th century). It represents the Cathedral of Santiago as the most important building in Europe, among many others of enormous relevance.

From Sea to Sea. The Camino de Santiago in 3D. Via de la Plata is an exhibition of three dimensional photographs, with spectacular large format pieces, created using stereophotography, showing images of heritage, landscapes and the pilgrims who walk this pilgrimage route.

The title of the exhibition refers to a phrase included in book IV of the Calixtine Code which tells of the Apostle James appearing to Emperor Charlemagne where he asks his army to fight the Pagans, free the way and visit his basilica and sarcophagus, prophesying “…and after you all peoples will pilgrimage there, from sea to sea…”.

The 3D exhibition From Sea to Sea. The Way of St James in 3D is a 3-dimensional photography show featuring spectacular large pieces produced using a stereographic technique. The exhibition presents images of the pilgrimage routes, heritage sites, landscapes and pilgrims on the English Route, Fisterra–Muxía Route, Portuguese Route and Portuguese Coastal Route.

The title of the show is a reference to the sea of the Atlantic routes which open the exhibition, the sea of the Portuguese and Galician coasts that is so strongly linked to the Portuguese pilgrimage routes to Santiago. And it ends with the open ocean along the Costa da Morte, the physical and symbolic finishing point of the route to Fisterra and Muxía, after reaching Compostela.

The President of the Galician Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, called today for the involvement of society as a whole to ensure that Xacobeo 2021 increases Galicia’s Gross Domestic Product by 0.9% and creates 11,500 full-time jobs in the next four years, from today until 2022, the last exercise that will be directly influenced by the Holy Year.

For today’s pilgrim, the experience of the Way of Saint James is unique and incomparable. It evokes the medieval pilgrimage to Compostela in intimate contact with nature and a timeless past. The traveler retraces a spiritual itinerary marked by the footfalls of centuries of sojourners. This emotional charge, the legacy of a rich culture and still living traditions – hospitality being the most durable of its hallmarks – is reinforced by the steadfast endurance of places now celebrated as World Heritage Sites. The Camino’s hamlets and cities embrace historic cathedrals, monasteries, churches and sheltering pilgrims’ hospitals. Natural and manmade landscapes both bear witness to their intimate relationship to pilgrims of centuries long past and with the indelible routes that lead to Compostela, trails that define some of the most significant cultural itineraries of our times.

Savoring today’s pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James allows travelers to encounter themselves, but also to know other pilgrims, casual companions met along the Way and local residents, and to view the spectacular panorama of a universal and freely available Camino always reverenced as sacred space. At the end of this physical and spiritual adventure, arrival at the eternal city of Santiago de Compostela and its cathedral finds its fulfillment in an intimate pause in the silent tomb crypt of the Apostle and with a hug bestowed on his stature which presides over the high altar. A legendary complement to the Way of Saint James with its own allure is the trail that extends from Santiago to the continental Land’s End, Finisterrae or Cape Fisterra, a trail that intimates another aspiration of medieval travelers. After completing the Camino proper at the stately shrine of St. James, a final confrontation with the boundless sea offers deep emotional significance.

The Codex Calixtinus and the Cancionero da Vaticana will be exhibited for the first time together in Galicia thanks to an agreement between the Xunta and the Vatican

The conselleiro for Culture and Tourism, Román Rodríguez, signed an agreement today in Rome with the Vatican Apostolic Library which would allow, for the very first time together in Galicia, the exhibition of two pieces of high symbolic value for Galician culture: the Liber Sancti Iacobi, one of the three illuminated Calixtine codices which, in addition to the original one in Santiago, are still preserved today; and the Cancionero da Vaticana, an essential piece of the Galician-Portuguese lyric tradition, that will be the first time you can visit in our community.

The works will be part of Galicia, un relato no mundo, the first major international exhibition of the Xacobeo 21 programme, which will open next November at the Museo Centro Gaiás de la Cidade da Cultura de Galicia.

The Vatican’s Liber Sancti Iacobi is, along with Santiago’s original, one of only three illuminated Calixtine codices; it allows us to see graphic details lost in the original Compostelan document, such as the face of Emperor Charlemagne himself.

In the Middle Ages, several reproductions of the Codex Calixtinus were made in Compostela with the aim of spreading the cult and pilgrimage to Santiago throughout Europe, helping it reach the important intellectual centres of worship of the time. The Liber Sancti Iacobi itself was written with the desire to connect Compostela and Galicia with the rest of Europe, it created the legend of Santiago’s appearance to the Emperor Charlemagne, the most prestigious figure in medieval Europe, and his arrival in Compostela.

The Cancionero da Vaticana is, together with the Cancionero de Ajuda (Ajuda Songbook) and the Cancionero de la Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (Songbook of the National Library of Portugal), one of the corpora in which the medieval Galician Portuguese lyric is kept. It is a work with an exceptional symbolic value for Galicia, but also central to Europe’s literary tradition, since the Portuguese Galician lyric, together with poetry in Occitan (south of France) and Oïl (north of France), were the continent’s first literary expressions in the Romance language.

This is a monumental collection of 1,200 cantigas which were copied in Italy at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries by order of the Italian humanist Angelo Colocci; unfortunately, the original documents were lost. It contains pieces by the most emblematic names of medieval Galician literary tradition: the kings Alfonso X El Sabio and Don Dinís, Paio Gomes Chariño, Afonso Eanes do Cotón, Pero da Ponte, Meendinho or Airas Nunes, among many others.
