This congress has been held since 1993 and this edition, which will be the eleventh, will be dedicated to the important figure of the archbishop of Compostela Bérenger de Landore. In 2018 it was 700 years since his arrival in Santiago de Compostela.

The XI International Congress of Jacobean Studies will feature the scientific direction of Adeline Rucquoi, a member of the International Committee of Experts of the Camino de Santiago and a PhD in history from the University of Sorbonne (Paris IV) and Director of Emeritus Research at the C. N. R.S. (National Scientific Research Centre, France).

In this edition, the Congress will feature 20 speakers who are top-level researchers, formed of veteran representatives of institutions, chairs and study centres, who will be joined by other younger, promising specialists, who will also present valuable reflections and contributions on significant aspects about the figure of the archbishop Bérenger de Landore, the town of Compostela, the Order of Preachers, Jacobean art and culture.

Professor Barton was known for his efforts in promoting the Way of St James in Great Britain, where he worked with Turismo de Galicia on several activities. In his new position in Florida, United States, he had also began working to disseminate information about the pilgrimage to Santiago. He was on the editorial board of the magazine Ad Limina, to which he also contributed, as well as the most recent conferences organized by the International Committee of Experts on the Way of St. James, Maria y Iacobus en los caminos xacobeos (2015) and Jacobus patronus (2017).

Professor Simon Barton (1962) was a professor of medieval history at the University of Exeter (United Kingdom) and since early 2017, a professor at the University of Central Florida (USA). His works include Conquerors, Brides, and Concubines: Interfaith Relations and Social Power in Medieval Iberia; A History of Spain; Cross, Crescent and Conversion: Studies on Medieval Spain and Christendom in Memory of Richard Fletcher; The world of El Cid; and his doctoral thesis, The aristocracy in twelfth-century Leon and Castile.

Professor Barton received a number of honorary recognitions and awards, including President of the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, winner of the Premio Del Rey given by The American Historical Association, member of The Royal Historical Society and corresponding member of the Real Academia Matritense de Heráldica y Genealogía.

Turismo de Galicia expresses its sorry at this loss, which is added to that of Robert Plötz this past summer, depriving Galicia and the Way of St James of an excellent researcher and promoter. We offer our deepest sympathies and solidarity to his family and friends.

The initiative to achieve its inclusion sprang from the Xunta de Galicia, which took over the proposal formulated by the International Committee of Experts in the Way of St James, and submitted it to a vote at the Jacobean Council held in Santiago de Compostela in December 2015, coinciding with the opening of the Jubilee of Mercy. This possibility was then evaluated by Spain’s other regions and by the institutions present in this organisation, presided by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Mr Íñigo Méndez de Vigo. His department, in concert with the General Office for Culture, was responsible for processing the application through the Sub-Directorate General for State Archives, part of the Directorate General for Fine Arts and Cultural Property, Archives, Libraries and Museums.

The inclusion of the Liber Sancti Iacobi in the Memory of the World Register underscores UNESCO’s appreciation of its value and significance, and shows that its relevance transcends the bounds of time and culture, and that it must thus be preserved for current and future generations and be shared will all the peoples in the world. This thus protects and raises awareness of the Codex and deepens the universal value of Jacobean heritage.

Eyewitness to Medieval Europe

Along with the Codex Calixtinus, UNESCO also recognises the medieval copies stored in the libraries and archives of Spain and Portugal. In fact, the full name of the proposal was The Codex Calixtinus of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral and other medieval copies of the Liber Sancti Jacobi: The Iberian origins of the Jacobian tradition in Europe, as proof of the importance that all of these documents containing the written tradition of the cult of St James and the Way of St James had in medieval Europe.

The Memory of the World programme is one of UNESCO’s three complementary initiatives that seek to protect and raise awareness of the world’s cultural heritage. The other two are the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, of which the World Heritage List is a part, and the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Galicia thus expands its catalogue of properties in these programmes, which already included the historic city of Santiago de Compostela, the Camino Francés, the Walls of Lugo, the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, the Camino Primitivo and the Camino del Norte, as well as the various sites along the aforementioned routes of St James, such as the cathedrals of Lugo and Mondoñedo and the Monastery of Santa María de Sobrado.

In the municipal government category, the award went to the Melide Town Council (A Coruña) for its work on beautifying and enhancing the section of the Way of St. James that passes through the town, signage for natural and heritage resources, and cleaning up sections of the route.

In the category intended to recognize initiatives and actions promoted by Friends of the Way of St. James associations, the award was given to the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago Associations, which has been working for over 25 years to promote gatherings and congresses, as well as coordinating an ongoing hostel volunteer programme; and the Lugo Friends of the Camino de Santiago Association, which has done significant work in our community.

In the third category, the Camino de Santiago Awards recognize the Tui company Ideas Peregrinas, which offers a hostel and a pilgrim space; and RedEmprendia for the Spin Way initiative, which involves students from various countries.

Lastly, there is a fourth category recognizing activities of an academic, research or educational nature. In this case, the winners were the Department of the Way of St. James at the University of Torun (Poland) and A Merced School in Sarria (Lugo).

Strict quality control of its articles, which are subject to scientific rules guaranteeing their rigour and merits, have already led the publication to be included in the top national and international journal indexes and databases: Rebiun, Dialnet, Latindex, OCLC-World Cat and Regesta Imperii. With this approval, they are now joined by the ERIH Plus journal index, which awarded this recognition in the fields of History, Art History, Literature and Interdisciplinary Research in the Humanities.

The inclusion of Ad Limina in these indexes is a source of great satisfaction, as it consolidates the journal’s position as the preeminent scientific publication on the Way of St. James and pilgrimages, making it an essential reference for any scholar or individual interested in this field.

The journal has recently published its eighth issue, expanding the brief yet intense history since its appearance in 2010. Together with the excellent quality of the publication, this provides further proof of the importance which Turismo de Galicia, through Xacobeo, places on advanced research around Jacobean culture, as set out in the Way of St. James Master and Strategic Plan. This research is the basis of one of the essential values of the pilgrimage: its historical authenticity. The ultimate goal of the journal is to guarantee the future of research around the Way of St. James, a key element underlying its current revitalization.

Aim
The aim of the 10th International Congress on Jacobean Studies is to thoroughly explore the most significant aspects of the patronage of St James. From this perspective, it will analyse the characteristics of the Apostle as the patron saint and protector of nations, cities, hospitaller orders, military orders, confraternities and churches. There will be a special focus on investigating the spiritual, iconographic, symbolic, political and historical aspects of a relationship which has had a profound impact on the culture and mindset of many peoples in Spain and the Americas.

The Xunta de Galicia, in partnership with the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department of the University of Santiago, is offering two grants for researchers to cover lodging expenses for the duration of the conference.

Students, the unemployed and members of Friends of the Way of St. James associations will be entitled to free lodging at the San Lázaro pilgrim hostel, located in Santiago de Compostela, during the conference.

Dr. Robert Georg Plötz was born in Nürnberg on 18 July 1942. He studied German Studies, History, Philosophy, Ethnology and Sports Studies at the University of Würzburg (1963-1969). He worked as assistant professor in the Chair of German Studies and Ethnology at the same university.

From 1971 to 1977 he held the position of Assistant Professor of German at the University of Oviedo (Asturias). From 1979 to 2007 he held the position of Director of Niederrheinisches Museum für Volkskunde und Kulturgeschichte in Kevelaer (Lower Rhine).

From 2008 to 2013 he worked as Teaching Professor of the History of Franconia (Chair of Medieval History) at the University of Würzburg. He participated in many summer courses and conferences in Europe and the USA.

He has many publications on the history of culture and popular traditions, but above all studies on pilgrims and pilgrimages. He was president of the Deutsche St. Jakobus-Gesellschaft (1987-2012) for 25 years.

In 1999 he was awarded the Gold Medal from the city of Santiago de Compostela, in 2001 the Silver Medal of Galicia from the Government of Galicia, and in 2004 the Merit Cross of Germany. From its foundation he was member of the International Committee of Experts of the Way of Saint James.

Pilgrim and supporter of the associative movement.

His contribution to the world of research into the Way of Saint James and the Jacobean pilgrimage, specifically in Germany but also in many other places, sets a benchmark. His research was combined with his enjoyment of being a pilgrim and his support for the Way of Saint James associative movement.

The Government of Galicia wishes to send its condolences to his relatives and friends, also expressing its appreciation for his long career and important contribution to the revitalisation of the Way of Saint James.

Nava Castro thanked the nine members of the committee, headed by Paulo Caucci, professor at the Università degli Studi di Perugia, ‘on behalf of all Galicians and pilgrims for your support over this first quarter century in defining, managing and promoting the Way of St. James’. Some members were even involved in getting the pilgrimage route listed as the First European Cultural Route, an event which took place 30 years ago this October and which Turismo de Galicia plans to commemorate with special programming.

At the meeting, held today at the International Pilgrim Welcome Centre, the International Committee of Experts on the Way of St. James discussed various key topics related to promotion and research around the route. These included the International Congress on Jacobean Studies, scheduled for November in Santiago de Compostela; issue 8 of Ad Limina magazine; and the Way of St. James and Pilgrimages Department, recently created by Turismo de Galicia, the University of Santiago and Santiago Cathedral. The department director, Domingo González Lopo, took part in the meeting in order to coordinate with the committee, which provides advisory services. The various reports presented by the specialists demonstrate the opportunities and dynamism represented by the Jacobean phenomenon.

The International Committee of Experts on the Way of St. James is made up of: Paolo Caucci, chairman, professor at the Università degli Studi di Perugia and president of the Confraternita di San Jacopo di Perugia; Manuel Castiñeiras, professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona; Klaus Herbers, professor at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürberg; Fernando López Alsina, head of the Medieval History Department at the Universidad de Santiago; Robert Plötz, professor at Universität Würzburg and president of the Deutschen St. Jakobus-Gesellschaft; Adeline Rucquoi, director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and president of the Société Française des Amis de Saint Jacques de Compostelle; Simon Barton, professor at the University of Exeter; Segundo Pérez, director of the Compostela Theological Institute and dean of Santiago Cathedral; and María José Azevedo, professor and head of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal).

Pathways that lead through the magnificent natural and architectural heritage of all four provinces, ancient ways that converge at Compostela, goal of the Camino, the pilgrimage route that is among the community’s principal emblems.

Cultures that are living, diverse, modern and our own, which emerge around every corner and reflect our creative capacity and expertise in the different fields of performance.

In 2017, the Cultura no Camiño programme – which kicked off in October 2013 – will again unite these two strengths, our geography and our art. It will feature a revamped lineup, which will be unveiled between 15 April and 30 September in 98 participating municipalities, all of which are located on the different routes of the Way of St. James in Galicia.

Concerts in various musical styles, along with theatre performances, dance, magic and the new circus, all make up a packed cultural and leisure calendar, coordinated by Turismo de Galicia and the Galician Department of Culture, Education and University Planning through the Agadic (Galician Agency of Cultural Industries), with the sponsorship of Gadis.

Edition Number VII of Ad Limina was coordinated by Professor Manuel Castiñeiras, member of the International Committee of Experts on the Camino de Santiago, with the intervention of several of its members – Simon Barton, Robert Plötz, Adeline Rucquoi and Manuel Castiñeiras- who will give reviews of some new publications on the Camino de Santiago.
